A War of 1812 Experience
The War of 1812 comes to life yearly at the historic village
of Fanshawe Pioneer Village in London, Ontario. The War of 1812 encroached on the area with battles such as Moraviantown,
the Battle of the Thames, Longwoods and skirmishes and raids along the north shore of Lake Erie.
The re-enacting weekend starts Friday October 1st
as re-enactors, entertainers, educators, sutlers(period merchants) descend on the village to convert it to an early 19th century
community for a weekend full of tastes, smells, fun, education, excitement, thrills, explosions and battles which will be
sure to entertain the entire family.
Saturday and Sunday
the 2nd and 3rd the event kicks off in full swing. Visitors will see a full functioning village, marine battles each
morning with landings on the beach. Drill practice, artillery demonstrations, period drums, full afternoon battles as well.
The village will be a site to see filled with canvas tents selling everything from toy muskets to cookies to period garments
and cooking instruments. Throughout the day visitors will be entertained with music, shows and demonstrations. The village
cafe will be open for snacks, drinks and meals to fill the appetite.

of our local history in all its splendour. See it for yourself and enjoy a day in the past.
History
- Background of the War of 1812 in Southwestern Ontario
Between
March and the middle of August 1814 American forces were sent into western Upper Canada to destroy property in an attempt
to reduce the ability of the region to support the British army in the area. Communities such as Patterson's Creek, Charlotteville
(Turkey Point), Port Talbot, Long Point and Port Dover in western Upper Canada saw the destruction of their public buildings,
grain mills, private homes and barns at the hands of the raiding American parties. Even crops in the fields and cattle were
destroyed.
The area between Fort Malden, at Amherstburg, and Burlington Heights,
present day Hamilton, were virtually defenseless to attack. Following the Battle of Lake Erie, in September of 1813, and the
battle of Longwoods in March of 1814 the area of western Upper Canada, southwestern Ontario, had been abandoned.

The recreated historic pioneer village of Fanshawe, in London,
Ontario, becomes one of these communities during the War of 1812 weekend. American forces are in the area and the detachments
of British units attempt to hold them back. With the aide of local natives they engage in battle. The outcome is always uncertain.
Living history, alive, well and also entertaining, explosive and
dynamic. The War of 1812 returns to Fanshawe Pioneer Village in a representation of what occurred in this area almost two
centuries ago.
